Modi’s party set to gain big in Indian state elections

The Bharatiya Janata Party is set to win local elections in the provinces of Assam and West Bengal, whilst left-wing ruling parties in the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Communist Party of India (Marxist) are likely to be ousted in Tamil Nadu and Kerala respectively. This also comes in the wake of a major reduction in the voting roll for West Bengal, with millions of voters removed from the registry on grounds of fraud. This is a very significant development; not only does it underline that the BJP are still performing well despite their surprising setbacks in 2024 and has seen the ousting of Mamata Banerjee, a key opponent of Modi’s and a long-running Chief Minister for a traditionally anti-Hindutva province, but also underlines just how far the BJP is extending its strength in India’s east, which has previously been dominated by other factions. Pretty grim to see them succeed, in my view, especially with how many voters had to be disenfranchised in West Bengal beforehand.
