Félix Tshisekedi, President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, has stated that he’d be open to running for a third term, alongside considerations for delaying the upcoming elections in 2028 over the M23’s insurgency around Kivu. Tshisekedi has been in power since 2019, and this comes as part of a broader trend towards autocracy across much of Africa. Very concerning on all fronts, in my eyes, and we shouldn’t downplay the ramifications this would have if passed; it’s clear to me that, at least right now, he’s trying to normalise the idea.

Exactly what a leader committed to democracy would say.

a shame too because isn’t Tshikedli from a different party than Kabila? So they were kind of showing the ability to move towards a multiparty (if still very authoritarian) system?
