The European Commission plans to invite officials from the Taliban to Brussels to discuss returning Afghan migrants, signalling a further hardening of migration policy across the European Union. Around 20 countries want new arrangements, especially for deporting migrants with criminal convictions. The move raises legal and ethical questions because the EU does not recognise Taliban rule. Taliban officials would require visa exemptions from Belgium to attend. Critics warn that deportations to Afghanistan, amid a deep humanitarian crisis and mass forced returns from neighbouring states, could endanger lives.

Remember when we all clowned on Putin for recognizing Taliban and negotiating with them? Good times.

Makes my blood boil to think about all the people who will be forced to go to a country where women are basically slaves and anyone who doesn’t participate in their insane fundamentalism has to fear for their lives. Sure, some of them are criminals and that’s bad and in other cases should justify deportation but there has to be a limit to how horrible a place can be that you deport people to. Afghanistan is a place that’s worse than the worst prisons we have in Europe and for many people being there is probably worse than giving out the death penalty.

This Taliban? The country under investigations for crimes against humanity against half their population? Disgraceful.
