The DHS announced a policy change regarding the way that they grant permanent residence to a large class of visa holders.
People with student visas that got permanent residency through marriage, or people on dual-use visas like O-1 and H1-B would be required to leave the country to apply, and wait several months of processing time before approval.
This is relevant to the sub because it’s a very significant and devastating change to the process of acquiring permanent residency, i.e. H1-B workers would have their job severely disrupted while waiting outside the country for the green card to be processed, the immigrant spouses of US citizens would be separated for many months while the green card is being processed.
It’s a senseless policy that hurts high skill legal immigrants, supposedly the ones that conservatives are fine with, the most.
