The left is trying hard to spin Stephen Colbert’s final episode as some kind of massive cultural victory.
They’re calling it the “most-watched weeknight ever” for the show, with 6.74 million viewers tuning in. Rolling Stone, Variety, and the usual suspects are all pumping up the numbers like it’s a huge milestone.
But the truth is a bit more sobering when you look at the bigger picture.
The Late Show has been losing money for years. Reports say it was costing the network tens of millions of dollars annually, with a huge staff and Colbert pulling in around $15 million a year. When you spend that much time alienating roughly half the country with nonstop political lectures disguised as comedy, the audience eventually walks away.

Colbert’s finale drew fewer viewers than programs exclusively watched by people who still say “the clicker.”
You can bet at least 1 million of those were watching for the satisfaction of watching the door hit him on the way out.

Glad to see insufferable Colbert finally ousted from CBS. There are YouTubers getting more views than his finale – so big whoop!
And no one will miss it. He’ll be forgotten in fairly short order and will never be mentioned alongside his predecessors like Carson, Leno and Letterman.
Ditto for Kimmel and ultimately Fallon. But at least the latter isn’t known as an ultra partisan asshat.
The fact that his show was losing $40 million a year and was on for 11 years is really the only thing that I find amazing about him and his show.
There are shows that were canceled after a few years with losses fewer than that.
