Former Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras launches a new party, which was “a highly anticipated move ahead of next year’s parliamentary elections” according to the Greek daily Kathimerini. The former European figure of the radical left, Alexis Tsipras, announced on Tuesday the creation of a new political party called the Alliance of the Greek Left, with the aim of defeating the right-wing Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. “Our country needs a shock of probity and democracy,” he declared at a rally in Athens, as the government is embroiled in several scandals, including a major one involving the embezzlement of millions of euros in European Union agricultural subsidies. The return to politics of the former Syriza leader comes almost three years after he threw in the towel following a heavy defeat in the 2023 parliamentary elections. According to recent polls, up to 18% of those surveyed say they are ready to support a party he would lead, which could place him second behind Mitsotakis.

Tsipras named his party ELAS . ELAS both sound like Hellas ( a very cheap effort to sound patriotic , his speech also had like 20 mentions of the word homeland ) but is also the same acronym of the military branch of EAM ( by far the biggest and most successful Greek resistance group against the Nazis founded by the Communist party which later participated in the Greek Civil War ) . The usage of such a historically and emotionally important ( and charged ) symbol for cheap communication purposes really symbolises what Tsipras is . He is blatantly trying to co opt the history both of the communist party and of PASOK , despite both parties still being active and seeing their support growing . A four time loser , an extremely polarising figure who sees himself as a savior and has zero respect for history . And of course the best gift for the ND goverment who prefers ( and boosts ) Tsipras as an opponent . It is astounding how disastrous Tsipras has been for the Greek centre left and how beneficial for the Greek right . He is the greatest gift to Greek conservatism since the Venizelist coup of the 30s . And he destroyed what Andreas Papandreou managed to built in the 70s and 80s . With his toxicity he managed to permanently divide the Greek left and centre left .
