Submission Statement:

What in tarnation! My govt 😫

So in theory it sounds great that—if this is actually a donation of equity—some of OpenAI’s profits will become part of our govt funds. Could be used to pay down debt, save social security, etc. I’m not sure why we need a sovereign wealth fund while we have this much debt. Can anyone explain any rational thinking behind that? The concerning part, of course, is that the govt would have a major financial incentive to prop up OpenAI. This would give Altman a lot of power in regulation around AI. It’s too sleezy for my tastes. And if isn’t a donation but rather “cheap” shares or something then 🤮

Anyway discuss

Why would the US invest in the worst of these companies. I mean maybe they want to invest in Yahoo when Google was coming up

I’d support this if we were taking a stake in all the major AI companies, if anything we’ve been far to lax compared to how we treat other duel use technologies such as nuclear energy, but this reeks of just rewarding a toady who will toe the party line.

Hell yeah, tie your administration to the poster child of AI, it’s not like there’s a brewing electoral backlash to the industry from Florida to California

  4. This is great and I can’t wait for the next Democrat president to take voting control of Exxon, JPMorgan, Boeing, and Blackrock. GO AMERICA!

Yes, please leash your name to a company ran by a person most of the country holds a bipartisan disdain for.

It’s a mixture of socialism and crony capitalism, the government should never own stakes of a company except for extreme and temporary circumstances.

I feel like we have been waiting on OpenAI’s IPO filing coming “any day now” for like 2-3 weeks.

That plus this news leads me to believe the business is probably not in impressive shape and is looking for a lifeline of some kind to prop up its value once it fully discloses it’s numbers.

With SpaceX on deck trying to go public on shaky fundamentals we might actually be at the top. Interesting few weeks ahead.
