I actually do think you should need a permit to cut down a tree in most cases in residential neighborhoods. The possibility that things go wrong and it falls on power lines a neighbor’s house or vehicle or worse is non-trivial. The state has an interest in making sure the person doing the tree removal is insured and knows what they are doing.

Because cutting down trees when they are freakjng tall is hard job and can cause a lot of damages.
