All the recent fires at scrapyards, do you think it's all a coincidence? I don't. Because outside of batteries, metals, plastics and fabrics don't just spontaniously combust like hay bales in summer.

They created scrappage schemes to dispose of many road-worthy used cars, had manufactuers make overpriced* new cars that allegedly** fall apart more easily – and now they're burning down salvage and scrap yards to make old car parts even more scarce than they already are.

*For instance: remember the heartwarming 'pro family' advert for the Volvo EX90? That SUV, targeted at families, costs £73, to 100 thousand pounds – comparible to used supercars and far from the majority its demographic can't afford.

**"allegedly", because unreliablility can be attributed to lazy owners not wanting to perform basic maintenance on their cars.

But has there been a large increase in these fires or is the true amount being conflated?

  2. Maybe we are now seeing them more because the first gen Tesla, Rivian, Chevy EV and Fords ect are all starting to finally get to the scrapping point now and operators are not following safe battery handling? Most EVs on those skateboard platforms are under 10yrs old, now they’re finally aging out and needing to be recycled or disposed of.

  3. I feel like you would have more of a point if instead of scrap yards it was used car dealerships going up in flames.
