it wasn’t ,Vatican City is named after(*Mons Vaticanus*), vatican hill the geographical location where the city-state resides. The hill’s name originates from the ancient Latin word *vates*, meaning **”prophet”** or **”seer”**, as the area was historically known as a place where soothsayers made prophecies.

Same reason why “mastodontic” means “with boob-shaped teeth” aka that’s not how words work.

Edit: For more information; this is a complex set of history of where the name ‘Vatica’ originated from, ex. words do not simply work like this, and also the symbolism within the goddess herself which traces itself to Mesopotamian/Semitic myth when the goddess just became affiliated with places and or other words. So indeed, they might be doing something dark here, just not what you think.
Symbolism will be ~~their~~ our downfall.
And also for the theorists that haven’t chimed in on stuff like this yet; Christianity/Abrahamic religions is/are constructed as well from these ancient myths. There’s several eras of history where we just built upon the oral stories to make it sound more real.
**If you want the why on Vatica:**
They study symbolism, not demons or ancient Gods; although they still do this in private with rituals that come from tribal leader COA rituals (Coming of age) mentioning their “private” parties where they do eyes wide shut type stuff. The ancient Gods themselves are tied to both harvest cycles, and more ancient studies (before the very first agriculture-based civilizations) of the workings of the movement of planets and the dipping of the sun and the moon below the horizon and it coming back up again. This is where we originally get the (heaven/hell) thinking from. The concept of Gods itself is based upon patterns we see in the sky.
Why the Vatican chose the underground Goddess? I have not researched at all, but again; the purpose here would be the no pun intended subliminal messaging of the mind to signal to others who are ‘in the know’ to seek patterns within their little organization.

I thought there would have been an actual answer by now, but I forgot how Reddit is just a place for hilarious, comedic replies.

Because that was the Roman name of the hill and field upon which the Papal palace was built 1500+ years later. Before the Romans, the Etruscans were there and had a similarly-named deity which may have been where the Romans got it.

The Paul VI Audience Hall also has a massive statue of Satan rising from hell and is shaped like a snake.
