Operation Highjump remains one of the strangest military operations of the 20th century. In 1947, the United States sent nearly 5,000 personnel, multiple ships, and aircraft to Antarctica — equipped for an 8-month mission. They left after 8 weeks. No official explanation was ever given for the early withdrawal. The classified portions of the operation's report have never been fully declassified. But the real story of Antarctica might be even stranger than the conspiracy theories surrounding it. Beneath the ice, there's a hidden network of subglacial lakes — some buried under thousands of meters of frozen mass. Scientists have drilled into several of these isolated water systems and found microbial life surviving in complete darkness, with no sunlight, using chemical reactions instead of photosynthesis. Then there's Blood Falls — a red waterfall seeping from Taylor Glacier, caused by iron-rich brine that may have been trapped beneath the ice for an extremely long time. At the South Pole, scientists built IceCube — an observatory using ancient transparent ice to detect neutrinos from exploding stars and black holes. The ANITA experiment, carried by balloon over the continent, detected radio signals from unexpected directions that still spark debate among physicists. Antarctica doesn't need fabricated secrets. The verified science alone is strange enough to ask: what else haven't we found down there? What's the strangest theory you've heard about Antarctica?

My guess is they’re just covering up an ill-conceived mission. US military ships weren’t designed to operate in the Southern Ocean.
Its a very interesting event, taking that big of a Navy group to the Antartic for “science”. Especially when we know the Nazis had been there

They were probably looking for resources and how realistic it was to try to control them. Probably left because they realized it was too difficult.
Likely had something to do with fightin commies as well.
My guess.
