  1. 1. Summary

The US House Judiciary Committee led by Reps. Jim Jordan published a 35-page interim report titled “Closed for Competition: South Korea’s Discriminatory Attacks on American-Owned Businesses” on Wednesday, which accused of Korean government “discriminatory actions” against Coupang, US e-commerce giants, with NIS coercion & the prosecution of Coupang CEO.

    2. How is this related to the sub

    (1) Coupang crisis: Americans are mobilizing to defending Coupang against Korea’s investigation into cybersecurity disaster caused by Coupang.

    (2) The rise of Extractive institutions & Tech Oligarchy in the US: American decision making process is not driven by national interest but profit motive of a narrow clique of ruling elites.

    3. My opinion

I know lobbying is an honored American tradition…but attacking an obedient ally after being paid a few million dollars? It just looks like corruption and banditry in broad daylight. Korean media who lacks understanding of US politics are screeching about how the whole US federal government was bought off with few million dollars “bribes” by Coupang, inflaming anti-American sentiment.

Lobbying practice in the US seems to be evolving into borderline corruption. It should be reformed to be less destructive and despicable.
