(1) Digital platform regulation: Korean government introduced EU-style DSA but the debate on whether this new online regulation damage “Free Speech” as conservatives and Americans are decrying this an oppressive measure.
3. My opinion
Online disinformation involving malicious online influencers harassing individuals with misleading or fabricated reports ( “wrecker” phenomenon) has been a problem for a while. The situation got worse with the rise of Rhee-Park School ( an online troll farm network run in preschools by evangelical extremists) and CPAC-funded far-right conspiracy theory YouTubers. Even prominent figures like former President Yoon Suk-Yoel got online brain rot from these disinformation campaigns leading to December 3rd insurrection.
To counter this rising trend of online slop disinformation campaigns undermine Korean society, the government is implementing online regulation based EU DSA.
But, there are concerns that free speech with violated and Americans are greatly outraged as their online platforms are subject to regulation. Trump administration threatened sanctions on Korea over “free speech violation”.
