  1. >The recruiters told Mr. Platner he was “the one,” a “hero of the movement,” “a historical figure” who could be “leading a revolution,” according to half a dozen people with knowledge of their conversations.
But a clutch of people who cared about Mr. Platner were telling him something completely else. They worried about his mental health, amid his ongoing efforts to heal from post-traumatic stress disorder after tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. They feared this trio of out-of-state operatives was a dangerous combination of inexperienced and overconfident. The worst-case scenario, they thought, wasn’t running for Senate and losing — it was destroying the life he worked hard to rebuild.

/u/ty04 posting my reply top level for attention

    —-

if all this drama about mod and user behavior and unjust bans was valid, I honestly don’t know how how I don’t get banned more

but really, I don’t get how y’all (not literally you, luv u bby) get banned so much and still either act dumb or somehow actually don’t get it

mods try to maintain some level of discourse in the DT. they do a messy job of it, especially when we (and events in the world) make messy discussion. but they usually let users get away with quiiiiiite a bit

and quite a few users (me included!) will ride the line sometimes. we might not even go over the line, but will play around in a gray zone. and sometimes you catch a ban before you reach the line. sometimes you’re over the line and don’t catch a ban. whatever.

thing is, some users are on that line a LOT. which means they catch those “unjust” bans weirdly often. and they catch legit bans often.

I don’t know how to put this in a way that doesn’t require sitting down to write a paper on it, but constantly being at the edge of what’s acceptable just hurts community vibes. and the more people that do it, and the more often, the worse vibes will get. discussion itself becomes hard, and it becomes more likely to devolve into hostilities and toxicity

**rule 5 and 1 and 3 and whatever don’t exist just for abstract reasons, they exist because people acting on their most basic and shitty impulses turns a place into 4chan. the community becomes unpleasant, and toxicity becomes a feedback loop.** the way I see it, mods do a decent job of stopping that feedback loop from starting

when a guy has just been credibly accused of rape, it’s horrendous vibes to make a post saying nothing more than “Satan (D) over any Republican” or whatever (I don’t know what the post was, I didn’t see and don’t really care, I’m making a general point).

I say all the time that if you have a controversial or spicy take to make, and can’t be funny about it, just add in a *little* bit of nuance. Say *something real*. Make a *point* in *context* with some reasoning, maybe some persuasion, justification. Fight the termination of thought if you’re about to say something that has a potential to make people *react* rather than *reply.

A post like “Satan (D) over any Republican” is crass, it is conflict-embracing, it’s not quite shit-stirring but it’s close, it’s not quite conflict-seeking but it’s close. It’s a TRUE statement, yeah. Hell yeah it’s a statement I agree with. But ugh, it’s unpleasant to simultaneously amp up and trivialize (that’s not the right word, but treat crassly) rape allegations, *while lighting up like 3 different constantly-heated factional faultlines that exist in politics and in this community*

and it doesn’t have to be rape, or about a specific political thing. This place just sucks so much ass when *real discussion* is constantly preempted by something more superficial and often more negative

And yeah, it’s lame seeing mods dip into that gray zone where normal users are at risk of getting banned. I’ve got my peeves with the people in charge, a few in particular. I just don’t think it’s that big of a deal in this case.

It’s so small stakes that I don’t think it’s asking much for the users who really care so much to go write up a halfway sane complaint and request that some specific behavior stop or something. If a person’s really that upset, try to address it in a way that doesn’t suck. raid posts goth aoc twice as much as they should, when /u/ty04 would get banned for it. I don’t think that *needs* to be an issue, but the charitable view is that it sets a temptation to join in, for the rest of the users who can’t help themselves. there’s an inequality in goth aoc posting limits lol.

But instead you see *multiple* people complaining that ONE GUY was told to stop posting about bodily fluids, and then they crash out (repeatedly, over months) that cdstephens posted [this](https://i.redd.it/5svjll8llv621.jpg). That is just a fundamentally unserious complaint and fundamentally unserious behavior unless cd had JUST banned someone for stick art… pooping or something, I don’t know.

I don’t get how people can’t understand the simple concept of “just fucking chill for a minute”

  3. if joe biden had released a rambling eleven minute video in which he took zero blame for anything, said he was only dropping out because the “establishment undermined him”, and that they were “false allegations built to put pressure on us normal people”, said video would run nonstop on both fox news and hasan piker’s twitch stream until the start date of this stellaris save i’m on

Apparently some Brazilian leftists are blaming their country being mid at soccer now on the rise of evangelicals which they say was propagated by the CIA, icos every world cup winner has been ‘catholic’ with the exception of England.

It’s such a lazy cope cos Argentina has also seen a significant increase in their evangelical population, calling Germany in 2014 and France in 2018 catholic is a crazy stretch and also every world cup winner being catholic is such a clear correlation doesn’t equal causation.

Brazil are mediocre now because they let their talent ID and football structures deteriorate. Although I guess saying the CIA made Brazil bad by unleashing pentecostalism makes for an easier emotional excuse.

  5. > On average, June temperatures across Western Europe were **3.05 degrees Celsius, or 5.5 degrees Fahrenheit, above their normal levels from the past few decades**, according to Copernicus, the European Union’s climate monitoring service. Previously, the region’s hottest June on record was June of last year.

Reposting from the last DT to hear your top policy proposals to mitigate climate change *besides* just taxing carbon (too easy).
