in another “beak” turn for EU-China trade relations, the EU has launched an anti-dumping investigation into Chinese exports of Peking duck following a complaint from European farmers. The EU accuses China of “peking” away at the EU’s agriculture industry through use of subsidies towards local soy-processing and feed mills.
While this mirrors Chinese anti-dumping investigations into “producks” such as pork and dairy products, it should be noted that the Chinese investigations closely followed EU tariffs on electric vehicles, while the EU investigation seems to be a standalone case. Whether this is the EU building up leverage for upcoming trade negotiations for China or if this is simply “eggsageration” from European farmers remains to be seen. My opinion is that it leans to the latter option because they focus on Peking duck instead of foie gras and caviar despite the fact that China produces those in “eggsellent” amounts as well.
In any case, the climbing of the value chain that Chinese agriculture is undertaking is leaving everyone else “quacking” in their boots.
