Most of these just come down to California being a large state with a large population… yeah they have large absolute numbers of republicans, but democrats consistently win elections there

As someone who lives in California, and in the rural/agricultural part of the state the article talks a lot about; we are still absolutely as blue haired, avocado toast loving, and polycule membership card carrying as you all think we are. But we’re also very conservative; and rural outside of the two main metropolitan areas. California is a big state, with a lot of people, and it’s incredibly diverse. But it’s also, I’d argue, pretty nice. I like it here, at least, even if it’s not perfect.

The length of California spans 700 miles, the equivalent of going from Savannah, GA to New York City.

In a state with nearly 40 million people, you’re bound to have a wide variety. You won’t even get the same area code in one county at times, whereas 11 states use just one.

Also, people really forget the history of California as a state that values individual autonomy and freedom (not license). The joke about it becoming “Commiefornia” is because it was basically libertarian for so long. Literal parts of the state were created as escapes from densification and “undesirables”. Yeah, it has an overregulation complex, but that’s freedom from externalities. And unfortunately, those externalities also meant people to a lot of voters.

    Yeah, it’s a giant state.

None have come out of CA for almost half a century. It was a *lot* more conservative back then.

Do you think the average Democrat in any state trusts the federal government to do what is right right now?
