Our country needs unity, peace, and a president of whom every Hungarian can be proud. The office of President of the Republic is not a profession, not a job, but the highest form of public service. The president’s duty is to serve and represent every Hungarian.
Judit Polgár, who has been nominated today for the presidency by prominent figures in Hungarian public life, is such a person; that is why I will meet with her tomorrow and ask her if she is prepared to serve our country in this new role until the new Constitution is adopted.
For decades, the name Judit Polgár has been synonymous with talent and perseverance. As the most successful female player in chess history, she topped the women’s world rankings for 26 consecutive years, while also ranking among the top ten players in the absolute world rankings.
A five-time Chess Olympiad champion, International Grandmaster, and recipient of the Hungarian Order of St. Stephen, her extraordinary life story was recently chronicled in the documentary *The Queen of Chess*. A few weeks ago, she was elected a fellow of Christ’s College (University of Cambridge).
Judit Polgár’s career to date has always been defined by her achievements. The recognition she has earned is not due to political affiliations or connections, but to her exceptional talent, diligence, unparalleled resilience, and integrity. She is a Hungarian whose accomplishments command respect and admiration both at home and around the world.
Personally, I would consider it a tremendous honor if she were to accept this invitation.

That’s kinda crazy, I watched the documentary about her relatively recently. Seems behind the iron curtain chess masters are bastions of liberalism lol

I assume they have consulted her before nominating her because must be awkward putting her in the spot like that given she’s not a politician.
Submission statement: On saturday, Hungary ousted it’s Orbán-era president, Tamás Sulyok, making the office vacant. Magyar’s announcement is important, since it’s the first time he endoresed a candidate for the job. It would also be the first time in 26 years that the president wasn’t proposed by Orbán’s party or his coalition partner (Ferenc Mádl and László Sólyom were independent personalities, but they were still backed by Fidesz).
