Did the author just fool himself on thinking Trump can’t be that simplistic? His simplicity, repetition, overgeneralization, and crude incisiveness, are the core of his rhetoric.

I think it’s important to remember that Trump pulled a similar stunt in the lead-up to and aftermath of the 2020 election: that is, subvert the public’s confidence in the election process with the goal of opening the door for him to explicitly interfere in the election. The fake-elector plot was just another iteration of Trump’s desire to create confusion that weakens trust between the people and their institutions.
I absolutely agree that Trump will try and interfere in these Midterms; I think his speech basically confirms it. And I think his tactic will be as it was before: create confusion that leaves room for doubt, and push a narrative that says, “this thing is broken and only I can fix it.”
