At least in part, it is in retaliation for a ban against American produced wines, and liquors, and for other reasons that are explained in the article. It didn’t just come out of the blue, as some might lead you to believe.

Yeah here in Canada they’re pushing narratives like ‘Trump retaliates with 50% tariffs due to Canadian wildfire smoke’ which is absurd. We’ve both had smoke, and not too long ago BC got a good flooding from the flood that came over from the US. Just things we have to deal with.
Although I’m reading reports one of the recent forest fires in Canada was very preventable, but a special interest group is in charge of the area so, you know.
I prefer free trade over trade wars but the narrative that there was free trade before Trump started a war always falls apart. This crap is always going on in the background and as far as i can tell he’s generally okay dropping our restrictions when other countries drop theirs.
TLDR: because Canada pulled alcohol off the shelves…which we know was retaliation against blanket tariffs and Trumps complete disregard for his own “best deal ever” (CUSMA). Not to mention the annexation threats, 51st state crap. Canada was punched in the mouth and now is the bad guy for retaliating?
