I think that a lot of "liberals" don't understand that criminals largely pay zero attention to gun laws. So when you make it difficult or impossible for good citizens to arm themselves, then the only armed individuals are the criminals.
I am a former police officer and once had a marksman certification. Yet the state of California makes it very difficult for me to carry. The fees are exorbitant. I have to renew every 2 years, and they recently doubled the educational requirement from 8 hours initially and 4 hours at renewal to 16 hours initially and 8 hours at renewal. Of course, that also doubled the cost for this training, and 16 hours is a legit 16 hours, not to mention the other fees.
They're trying to make it hard for good citizens to carry lawfully, which means that we mostly have only criminals armed, with no way for citizens to protect themselves against an armed assailant.
So for all of our "friends on the left", imagine you're sitting down at In-N-Out (or wherever) enjoying a double-double burger, when some criminal shows up and starts firing. Would you prefer?
A. Run like hell, or hide and simply hope for the best.
B. Call the police. Maybe they'll be there in 10 minutes or so. They can make a staged and coordinated entry, possibly within 20 or 30 minutes.
C. Armed good citizen takes out the bad guy.
