SS: This opinion piece is based on research at the
Center for Building in North America. It discusses several of the reasons why an elevator in the Unites states costs 4x more to build and maintain than one in Europe. It discusses various problems such as tougher ADA regulations, more restrictive unions demanding higher wages, and regulations that discourage prefabrication off site. All of these combine to not only make an elevator more expensive, but limit the use of elevators in the US all together to well below usage levels of many European and Asian cities.
Why r/neoliberal should care: housing theory of everything. More expensive elevators mean its less economical to build the missing middle housing. 5-6 story buildings more less sense when you have to drop $140 on an elevator vs 35k.
