For an actual, non-joke answer (and by answer I mean total guess), I think because of “credible threats” by Iran, they’re not letting any “top brass” walk across the tarmac where there would presumably be a clear line of site for a distant sniper or sudden drone strike, etc.
I’m not an expert, but I would expect that “box” is probably reinforced to be resistant to explosive and bullets.
