      It is paradoxically easier to convince the world to cease all trade with your country than it is to convince your country to cease all trade with the world.

That’s assuming the blocked capacity doesn’t get rebuilt elsewhere, which is extremely unrealistic. Data centers sites are highly substitutable. Assuming 90% “leakage”, even a big state like NY banning all new data center construction only slows AI by less than a day.

      Based on that NYT article about the US-Canada trade negotiations, the French language stuff seemed to be a low priority thing that the US probably would’ve dropped if pushed. The much bigger issue was Lutnick being a dick and reneging on the reduction of steel and automobile tariffs.

      Carney selling the breakdown in negotiations as trying to protect the French language is pure political genius.

      The President’s veto power should be severaly curtailed or even outright abolished. It just enables Congress to stop doing its job and gives the President basically unchecked authority to do anything. Besides, let legislators go wild. If their collective wisdom brings the country to ruin, the people would be incentivized to elect better representatives. If the veto power is to remain, let the override threshold just be “Number who voted for the bill + 1”.

      A take on the whole “Republicans tried to bring hellfire on non-MAGA but no one took it that seriously” post-Charlie Kirk:

      I remember the terror and fear that we felt realizing that he was going to be used as a cudgel against all liberal speech. My immigrant family was genuinely worried about talking about anything politically-related in case they had to go out of the country (even though they were naturalized citizens!)

      I’m being so fucking serious when I say that We are Charlie Kirk completely shattered that image. Legit overnight the vibes completely changed.
