A post about the financial risks carried by the data center buildout. I think this is a valuable addition to the data center discourse we’ve been having which seems to have overly focused on issues of AI taking jobs or environmental impacts without asking if the data centers are a good investment to begin with. Major banks and investors are starting to get worried about the sheer scale of data center buildout and more importantly the profitability of the whole affair and are trying to offload their risks onto the retail market. It’s very possible that continues buildout without thought of economic stability will end in disaster as the risks compound into a sudden bubble burst where a lot of people lose their shirts.
