  1. Haven’t seen this posted yet but a group of Nigerien soldiers attacked a range of sensitive sites around the capital of Niamey including the presidential palace, national broadcaster and airport. Heavy gunfire was reported on Friday night and early Saturday morning with the situation calming as the military regime seemingly regained control.

The attempt was probably caused by growing frustrations from within the military against the ruling juntas for their inability to ineffectively combat the advancing JNIM insurgency, the junta themselves had overthrown the civilian government for their own perceived failures in combating the insurgencies. It has become obvious that the junta in Niger as well as their neighboring states of Mali and Burkina Faso are unable to beat back JNIM, as well as other insurgencies including the Islamic State in the region and the Azawad insurgents who have aligned themselves with the Islamist insurgencies against the juntas.

    Second attempt at submitting.
