Texas has significantly expanded property-tax relief, with nearly 61% of senior homeowners now paying no school district property taxes. Overall, about 2.5 million Texas homeowners (39.2% of homesteads) pay zero school property taxes.

Recent legislation raised the homestead exemption to $140,000, or $200,000 for homeowners over 65 or disabled. Average school property-tax bills have fallen 13.5% overall and 33% for seniors still paying taxes.

Texas Republicans are pushing further relief, but differ on how:

Gov. Greg Abbott: wants a 3% appraisal cap, spending limits, voter approval for tax increases, and eventually eliminating school property taxes on homeowners.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick: proposes increasing the homestead exemption by another $40,000 and lowering the senior exemption age from 65 to 55.
