I like that Chicago is one of few cities in the world to have true 24/7 service on some of its train lines. But a lot of trips can’t be done by train, and that’s where the elephant in the room is.
The US has the most well-equipped cars in the world and the most outdated buses in the developed world. It’s no wonder why nobody wants to take the bus. Just look at that picture!
Even in transit-oriented NYC, buses are seen as a second-class citizen (hence why Mamdani wanted to make them free but not the subway).

* NITA will coordinate fares, service planning and capital investments across Chicago’s three transit operators to improve regional connectivity.
* NITA is tasked with establishing systemwide standards for frequency, safety, cleanliness and accessibility to enhance rider experience.
* Fare simplification and systemwide fare capping will make transit more affordable and easier to understand for riders.
* Chicago Transit Authority, Metra and Pace Suburban Bus will continue to oversee their day-to-day operations, focusing on providing quality service.
* [Also importantly saving Chicago transit from a fiscal cliff, with money being shifted from the Road Fund to transit, authorizing a .25% regional sales tax increase for transit, and diverting road fund and State Construction Account Fund money to capital projects for transit, 90% in northeastern Illinois (Chicagoland) and 10% for projects downstate.]
