Why are we pointing the finger at Canada? Almost all of their country is like snowy forests full of moose and beavers and they export way more oil than they use?
And yeah it’s a bit morbid but climate change might actually be a net win for them and other places that far up north. The melting ice will reveal more rare earth metals and fossil fuels and provide more real estate options

It’s pretty unfortunate, but I don’t see that Carney has any options in the near term.
Basically the entire country—including the left-wing NDP—demanded the removal of Canada’s most powerful climate policy in the carbon tax. We’re honestly lucky that Carney managed to preserve the industrial carbon price (which the Conservatives still want to eliminate).
He could try a less-efficient regulatory approach that hides the costs from voters, but that will impose even greater costs on the economy. With all the headwinds from Trump and US trade policy, there is precisely zero appetite for that from the electorate.
Maybe in a few years the political climate will shift and we can try major climate policy again. I certainly hope so. But as of right now, Carney’s hands are tied. Climate change is just too far down the list of priorities for most voters, especially with the escalating trade war and military threats from our closest neighbor.
