February 2023. Two subsea cables connecting the Matsu Islands to Taiwan were
severed within a single week. Fourteen thousand people lost the internet.
The international press called it a rehearsal for a blockade. A grey-zone
test run.
Taiwan's own National Communications Commission investigated and found no
evidence of deliberate sabotage. The finding was illegal anchor dragging by
Chinese civilian vessels — sand dredgers and fishing boats.
The first cable took fifty days to repair. The second took more than four
months. In the meantime the islands ran on a microwave backup link.
The same thing has now happened twice more, on two other continents, and both
times the official record came back the same way.
