I think they’re probably right but even if they were wrong, they would say the same thing. There’s a chance being the winner of AI will have civilisational level impacts and it would be idiotic to let the other guy get ahead

Now that both the US and Chinese governments have stated that they are opposed to a measured and verifiable slowdown, it seems almost certain that we as a species are going to just roll the dice on this one.

I was reading a book recently about Truman and nuclear weapons. There was a big movement at the time to establish international control of nuclear weapons and technology. But it was never able to survive American insecurity about losing their lead over nuclear weapons and Soviet distrust/intransigence.
We got pretty lucky that MAD was able to solve what international control couldn’t.
This discussion feels like that one except we won’t have MAD to save us.

Welp, now we know there is not going to be any slowdown at all, tbh nobody is going to take it seriously until there is a “cuban missile crisis” type of scare a few years from now when AI truly comes into the physical world via widespread robotics.

Much of China’s progress has been distillation of US models off their tiny slice of compute, so I don’t think this is really surprising lol
