    Westminster’s time is coming to an end, Welsh, Scottish, Northern Irish leaders say


    Submission Statement: The first ministers of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have declared that "Westminster's time is coming to an end".

    The nationalist leaders from Plaid Cymru, Sinn Féin and the SNP – who want their countries to leave the United Kingdom – signed an agreement on Monday which said no Westminster government had the right to "block democracy".

    SNP leader Swinney said Monday was a "pivotal moment in the constitutional journey of the United Kingdom". He said the elections in May for each nation created a situation with first ministers who believe "their countries should decide their own future. That principle of self-determination is an inalienable right," he said.

    He described Andy Burnham as the "last prime minister of the United Kingdom".

      To be honest, if a bunch of nationalist leaders did all meet together, this is exactly what I’d expect them to say.

      You have to wonder why they’re seeking confrontation now instead of in May. Is it because they’re worried about Burnham strengthening the unionist brand or because they see him as uniquely weak?

      My perspective from across the pond is that the UK government has actually been quite generous to the devolved governments. Not one of them isn’t reliant on cash from Westminster to keep operating, and none appear to have a credible plan to change that (Scotland, instead, is looking into borrowing money on its own instead). This does not look to me like a serious and sustained interest in national sovereignty; it looks like a populist expediency to keep dodging hard questions while wrapping it in a saltire or dragon.
