Submission statement:
More than 35 incidents of apparent railway sabotage across the central and northern Netherlands today, with pipes and cables deliberately placed on tracks. This caused major disruption around Amsterdam, Schiphol, Utrecht and Eindhoven. In at least one earlier incident a train actually struck metal placed on the tracks.
This coincided with Prinsjesdag and announced Farmers Defence Force protests against nitrogen policy, with hay bales also set on fire on roads. There is currently no established link between the farmers’ protests and the railway sabotage. FDF denies responsibility, although it says it cannot rule out individual farmers being involved.
Police, the public prosecutor and the AIVD are investigating. No suspects or motive have been identified so far.
