What the US can learn from Canada is employment density and vibrant CBDs.
In Canada, you can find really bad park-and-ride light rail stations with mediocre bus connections that have many times more ridership than American LRT stations with better land use and connections on paper.
It all comes down to downtown being far more of the destination in Canadian cities.

The Dufferin bus used to make me so angry. A very busy route, on a busy 4 lane road, where the right lane was used for parking at random spots. Tens of thousands of commuters lost hours of their lives every year, for decades, just so 17.5 residents who lived on Dufferin could park in front of their houses instead of around the corner.
The right lane has finally been converted to a bus only lane, but the absolute **howls** of outrage from these few entitled residents.
