This trend isn't purely organic, it has been promoted through mainstream propaganda machine in media like The Bear and The Menu to make the 'meat scab' burger seem like the peak of culinary excellence.
This wouldn't be the first time a food trend was designed to prepare the public for upcoming calamities. In the two decades leading up to the 1929 stock market crash, there was a coordinated push across food manufacturing and advertising to popularize specific food trends. such as hydrogenated vegetable shortenings, peanut butter, and processed cheese were cheap and lasted long without spoiling. stretching ground meat on a flat top or mixing it with fillers (like onions in the Oklahoma Onion Burger) was an adaptation of the 1920s lunch-counter model to combat food scarcity.
I fully realize that food trends come and go, and I have no problem with that. In fact, some of these trends stick with people their whole lives and heavily influence every society's culinary history. But I just wanted to point out the reality that if someone from the past was shown a smash burger, they'd think we were living in a Great Depression era, which we soon will be, due to soaring fertilizer and diesel prices that will make beef a luxury item in the coming years. Hence why the 'meat scab' is being popularized. but hey, at least the cockroach protein is out of the picture.

Where the fuck you been? LOL Don’t let the economists define it for you, the wage gap has never been higher and home ownership has never been so unachievable.
I mean… yeah restaurants can offer a smash burger at a more reasonable price than a monster thick burger at the moment… but there’s other reasons beyond propoganda/government… they’re much quicker to cook, and require less skill, they’re less messy, etc. And many, myself included, really like the taste. Lots of times peasant food turns out to be embraced and loved by all. Lobster was the food of the poor until people who didn’t know that had it and it became a luxury item, now poor people can’t eat that. Sugar was a luxury, now we can’t get it out of our food fast enough.

I personally prefer a smash burger to 3/4 lb burger that feels heavy and overwhelming. The portion is more reasonable and the crunchy texture is dope
