One of the biggest things that would genuinely improve productivity and economic activity in Europe is creating even better cross-border capital allocation mechanisms and stuff. Free movement and free trade is great and all, but an ideal Europe would function more like a federation. United States of Europe might be a bit much considering the vast language and cultural differences that just don’t really exist in America, but the idea of even greater integration is absolutely a step in the right direction

French Presidential candidate Gabriel Attal openly campaigning on the idea of a United States of Europe. Attal is framing this as a generational project to speed up the ever closer Union, a quicker and further integration among EU states. The remaining national barriers and fragmentation of the nation states leaves Europe weak, exposed and condemned to decline. The renewed integration drive comes amid growing calls from Mario Draghi and others for a federal Europe, which would be a new geopolitical pole and also a center of gravity for Canada, Australia and others.

Drop the ‘united states’ bit and find some other name for it that doesn’t involve aping America in yet another way and I may even be willing to vote for something like that in the future.
