Einstein's special relativity made a philosphical, untested leap that claimed ether is not real, and everything is relative, and conveniently slid Airy's failure, Sagnac's discovery and Michelson-Morley's experiment under the rug. With his simple theory, heliocentrism and geocentrism both became equally plausible.

Heliocentrism was on its last legs also because of the Gale experiment, and Einstein admitted he came up with special relativity just to combat the ether, even though he made a philosphical leap that never disproved the ether.
