  1. Off-The-Street on

First of all, it was October, a rare month for boys. Not that all months aren’t rare. But there be bad and good, as the pirates say. Take September, a bad month: school begins. Consider August, a good month: school hasn’t begun yet. July, well, July’s really fine: there’s no chance in the world for school. June, no doubting it, June’s best of all, for the school doors spring wide and September’s a billion years away.

But you take October, now. School’s been on a month and you’re riding easier in the reins, jogging along. You got time to think of the garbage you’ll dump on old man Prickett’s porch, or the hairy-ape costume you’ll wear to the YMCA the last night of the month. And if it’s around October twentieth and everything smoky-smelling and the sky orange and ash gray at twilight, it seems Halloween will never come in a fall of broomsticks and a soft flap of bedsheets around corners.

But one strange wild dark long year, Halloween came early.

One year Halloween came on October 24, three hours after midnight.

At that time, James Nightshade of 97 Oak Street was thirteen years, eleven months, twenty-three days old. Next door, William Halloway was thirteen years, eleven months and twenty-four days old. Both touched toward fourteen; it almost trembled in their hands.

And that was the October week when they grew up overnight, and were never so young anymore….

  2. Started listening to *Still Counting* (aka FiveThirtyEight 2.0), and honestly Nate Silver comes across as a really nasty piece of work nowadays. It’s far from an original observation that he’s a snarky guy with a big ego, but he’s gone from ‘a bit of a dick’ to ‘someone genuinely quite unpleasant’ over the intervening years.

He seems incapable of doing anything but put people down for his own self-satisfaction. Very unpleasant man.

(*And that’s not to say he’s inaccurate with his forecasting, he absolutely is one of the best at doing it.*)

  3. I spent some time on 4chan back in college. Never actually posted just lurked

It probably should have radicalized me a bit but instead I’m here

  4. Outside the DT has hurt me in confusion. It apparently thinks Donald Trump is the most damnable character in history since, besides Judas. . . Gaius Cassius Longinus and Marcus Junius Brutus?

  5. Started listening to the New Liberals Podcast (aka NSDAP 2.0), and honestly Danny comes across as a really nasty piece of work nowadays.

(And that’s not to say he’s inaccurate with his shitposting, he absolutely is one of the best at doing it.)

  6. The first thing I do after watching a show or playing a game is to check AO3 if there’s fanfics written about their characters. I was almost surprised when I found out that there’s a thriving community of Band of Brothers in AO3 still active 25 yrs post-show. And oh boy, do they deliver. lmao
