  1. tl;dr: Car-loving middle class refuse to shop in pedestrianised streets, leading to a loss of customers for businesses (both legal and illegal)

  2. There are concerns about availability of good public transport and safety in Delhi and a lot of the cities in India. It isn’t that the middle class loves cars, it’s that getting from point A to point B in Delhi in buses and metros is difficult and last mile connectivity is often a challenge. I used to take the local train in Bombay for more than a decade. When I could afford it, I switched to a car because it was so hard to be in the packed trains at rush hour in the heat and humidity – you’re exhausted by the time you reach your office, your clothes are ruined (and I work a white collar client facing job) and you’re worried about losing or damaging your belongings in the crowd. The occassional groping in the crowds doesn’t help.
