Submission statement: Peru held regional and municipal elections on Sunday, following Keiko Fujimori’s win in the presidential race. In Queropalca, a district of just over 730 residents in Huánuco, Hitler Mussolini Simeón Flores of the centre-left Ahora Nación won the mayoralty. He took 229 votes, or 34.54% of valid ballots, in a five-way race, beating his rival from the hard-right Renovación Popular by 25 votes.

This is relevant here for a few reasons. First, it illustrates Peru’s notoriously weak party system. According to his filing with the National Elections Jury, Simeón Flores was a member of Fujimori’s Fuerza Popular until last year, and he won this race under a centre left label. Second, it shows how plurality rules work at small scale: the mayor elect won with about a third of 663 valid votes. That makes this a good case study for the runoff and electoral reform debates the sub has regularly. Finally, Ahora Nación ran academic Alfonso López Chau for president in April, and he now sits in the 2026–2031 Parliament. Local results like this are an early signal of how the centre-left and Renovación Popular are positioning themselves under a Fujimori administration.
