Relevance: severe attack by the AKP regime against one of the few remaining opposition media, further entrenching authoritarianism in Turkey
The offices of the Turkish media Halk TV in Istanbul were raided by the police at dawn on Wednesday, October 14, abruptly halting their morning programs.
Per the channel's leadership, employees were prevented from accessing their offices and the authorities named a "temporary administrator" to replace the current board. A video shared by Halk TV on X shows the editor-in-chief Suat Toktas attempting to negotiate with the government-appointed administrator to keep the channel on air, in vain.
Halk TV was launched in 2005 by members of the Kemalist party CHP and has been critical of the Islamist-conservative AKP of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, at the time a newly-elected PM in a relatively democratic country.
Erdoğan's 23-year rule has since taken Turkey into one of the most staggering democratic backslides in the world, severely restricting personal freedoms, locking down the electoral system and suppressing dissent in the media and civil society.
Last month, Turkish authorities launched a massive crackdown against the LGBT+ community, kidnapping dozens of journalists, activists and legal professionals to "protect Turkish families and children" from gender and sexual minorities, assimilated to pedophiles and predators in the reactionary rhetoric of the AKP.
Erdoğan's regime has cemented its power by targeting journalists, taking over the overwhelming majority of the mainstream media outlets by appointing administrators and purging the newsrooms, imprisoning dozens of journalists and closing down outlets through police harassment, financial penalties and lawfare, ramping up censorship on content deemed as insulting to the president, the nation, the army or Islam, and blocking access to websites deemed undesirable.

!ping DEMOCRACY&EUROPE
Halk TV seemed to be a rather marginal outlet, but I guess that’s all that’s left once the main opposition voices have been silenced
And because Trump loves Erdoğan and Europe needs him too much, nothing will be done to stop this. God, I wish Turkey had shittier geography.
