Just to play devil’s advocate. It could be equivalent to phrases like, “back in my day” or “the good ol days” It may just be a common framing for storytelling as well. Like “a long time ago in a galaxy far far away.”
That being said, I don’t believe that ancient civilization had means to measure the age of the world. But i do believe those same people where smart enough to realize that something definitely was around before they were.
