The man who found water on a planet beyond our solar system was gunned down on his own front porch.
Carl Grillmair, 67, was a Caltech astrophysicist. His research paper revealed water on a distant world, a sign life could be possible out there.
He lived in Llano, out in the Mojave, because the desert dark gave him a clearer view of the stars.
On February 16, 2026, just after 6 a.m., deputies found him on his porch with a gunshot wound to the torso. He died at the scene.
Weeks earlier, he’d reported an armed trespasser on his property.
Did they ever know each other? Nobody’s said.
