How it feels knowing that reactionary conservatism is ontologically elitist and that there is no level of smugness we can show that makes them the less elitist ones:

See, the problem is you started your meme with the word ‘protestations’.
I think that’s the point of the Republicans’ “regular folks” posturing. So they can get elected without a real popular mandate and enact policies that benefit elites and actively harm the people that voted them in power and then blame that misery on someone else. At least that’s how it used to work. I don’t even know what the point of the Republican party is anymore. They’re just weird.
It is because Democrats are better educated (and probably wealthier?). So Democrat voters are literally more “elite” even if they don’t support elitist policies.
It’s always been vibes. If you know someone who’s well educated and maybe into wonkish policy. He’s a Dem. If you know someone who thinks we just need “to do what makes sense” and wants to focus on “the things that really matter.” That guy is a Republican.

Look, we know better, but when Dem party ‘elites’ hid Biden’s condition from the country for most of the 2024 campaign it gets really hard to explain this to the rest of the country. You gotta keep squeaky clean on certain things otherwise they become free gotchas for the other party, and this time around it was a complete failure.

Idk about this. Blue cities and states have populist optics, but in places where the blue tribe controls government at the state and local level, they regulate their way into unaffordability for anyone other than college educated elites. Dems need less smug self-satisfaction about how they’re the real party of the people and more self-awareness of the sources of America’s problems.

It’s because what people usually call elitism is “academic smugness” and not really elitism as in “believes or principles that justify the existence and maintenance of elite privileges”.

I recently listened to an episode of Ezra Klein with the author of postliberal order “Patrick Deneen”.
Deneen’s whole conversation revolved around how we’re living the latest stages of liberalism because how its dividing our elite and worker class, how democrats and by extension liberals have been pushing a cultural ideology that destroy the nuclear family and pressured conservatives to abondon many positions because they’re “losing” to liberal domination.
But his claims are void of any empirical observations, in fact it’s democrats that are consistently achieving policies empowering the working class and families like the ACA, BBB plan, Andrew Yang suggestion to subsidize marriage counseling…
It was only at the latter parts of the episode that Ezra pushed him back saying that your bold claims stem only from “values” and vibes and not intentions to pursue action and policies.
I guess this postliberal surge in the new right movement is a way to provide something new to the conservative platform. But I’m afraid it will looked as a pseudo-intellectual attempt to win back control that they lost to liberals. What I’m really afraid of though is this new right might dismantle democracy if they got the power they desire.
What the hell do policy outcomes have to do with winning elections?
Democrats are elitist because they encourage you to go to an Ivy League school.
