A bill modeled on previous Russian and Hungarian legislation outlawing “LGBT propaganda in schools”, advanced by the far-right Revival Party and backed by the left-wing Socialist Party unexpectedly passed after parts of the pro-EU center-right GERB alliance abstained, on the backdrop of vicious culture wars around sexual minorities’ rights.

I honestly don’t know why GERB decided this would be good optics. It’s baffling to me, and the only way I can describe their actions is fear — fear from the upcoming seventh snap elections in three years, fear from the collapse of the liberal (in name only) Movement for Rights and Freedoms, fear from the political strength of the Russian puppet that is our president.
What’s even more baffling is that the “Continuing the Change / Democratic Bulgaria” center-right liberal coalition didn’t vote against this. The majority of its members did, but many abstained, and two even voted _for_ the law.
What an utter clusterfuck and a sobering reminder that the narratives for “male boxers in the Olympics” have real life consequences — the far-right Revival party even said the law is a direct consequence of the Olympics…
