I kinda dislike the fetishistic tone this takes but it doesn’t change the fact that it’s deeply important to humanize the people who, to so many voters and angry protestors, were nothing more than Prepaid Debit Card Outrage.
And to take a sobering look at the reality: the municipal government actually made a concerted effort to accommodate a surge of migrants in keeping with its commitments, in spite of headlines proclaiming the city had immediately buckled and apologized profusely to Greg Abbott for not realizing how bad the migrant crisis was because it was so far away and then an eagle named Donald Trump nested there, in spite of outrage claiming that they were being pampered by the city and given extreme preferential treatment with municipal tax dollars (which kept them off the streets, mr “how can you have a city with homeless people?”) these accomodations were minimal and strained the spirit of the inhabitants who had only the promise it was temporary until they could get legal work.
I realize I’m politicizing now too but for real I’m so fucking angry about how this country has abdicated one of its basic and oldest economic and humanitarian policies in a Kafkaesque nightmare of overlapping authority and rules that keep these people from getting what they want: jobs and apartments.
