To see the cars of the future, look at China’s electric vehicles

Yeah, these EVs could completely destroy the US car industry but it’d destroy Tesla, too. Real moral ambiguity there.

  2. At the end of the day, I don’t get what the strategy is here

I think the EU strategy is great; tariffs on imports and subsidies if they move production into the country. Win-win! People get jobs, knowledge is spread out, the Chinese make money

North America hit peak new car sales decades ago; the Chinese just hit a new ATH in terms of new car sales this year, and is projected to continue growing. If we trade North America for China, that *is not an equal trade*! North American OEMs would lose FAR more than Chinese OEMs!

Let alone in the future; like I said, new car sales in the EU and the US have peaked and are declining. Growth is basically in the developing world. Do you think that if Ford or GM has to have a protective shell over North America they’d be able to go and compete in, say, Indonesia? No chance

There needs to be nice, somewhat managed competition. Trudeau should have said “okay, big tariffs 200,000%” and then gotten on a flight to Shenzhen (with tears in his eyes!) and asked for a battery factory in exchange for tax breaks
