Was waiting for this to get posted. I read the article and listened to Blair’s words. This is totally meaningless and a non-story.
1. First, and most importantly, the government is still not admitting that its 1.76% planned spending is a lie. The PBO found that the figures given rely on Canada being in a **4 year long recession** starting in 2026 to hit 1.76%. When asked about this, Cabinet told him that they got their GDP figures from NATO, who got it from the IMF. When the PBO asked NATO and the IMF where these figures came from, they said they had no idea what DND is talking about. They don’t have the figures. So let’s not even entertain accelerated spending until we’re being honest about the existing plan.
2. He doesn’t say that it’s going to happen. He says that it’s possible. This has always been known. This is, in fact, a problem that you can throw money at.
3. He said this would only be feasible if the federal government has the money. It doesn’t; we’re posting a $60B deficit and we haven’t even financed the promised national school food program, or the expansions of dental care and Pharmacare.
4. This government will not pass another ways and means motion, meaning that they will never be able to finance this.
