Michigan’s Gary Peters won’t seek reelection to U.S. Senate

I think this might be for the best. I like Peters and incumbency advantage is obviously a thing, but I feel like I saw too many ‘standard issue white guy’ Democrats losing in the Rust Belt/Midwest last year to feel super confident he’d win if he ran again.

There are options. Buttigieg officially moved to Michigan, so he’s probably eyeing this seat or the governor’s mansion once Whitmer leaves office. Whitmer herself could be interested in running since she’ll be coming to the end of her second term. But either or both of them might prefer to run for president instead. Rep. Haley Stevens might also run for Senate.

  2. Fucking ace play to retire in a favorable midterm environment. You haven’t stood out very much, Peters, but that’s not a bad quality in a legislator.

We haven’t had a Republican senator since 2001, let’s hope we can keep it that way
