As I understand, the main point of controversy is not that the AfD may vote for the bill advanced by the CDU – after all, you can’t prevent other members of Parliament from voting however they want – but that the CDU is counting on the AfD’s support to pass the bill. Did the signatories of the bill alter the wording or the content of the proposition to cater to the AfD? Are they negotiating backstage to coordinate the vote?
Seeing the cordon sanitaire break is nauseating wherever it does, but it’s particularly distressing that it would occur in Germany again of all places, with the AfD of all parties, and on such a key position of the far-right by the main conservative party which is comfortably leading in the polls.
