President Donald Trump on Monday indicated that he wants to reach an agreement with Ukraine to gain access to the country’s rare earth materials as a condition for continuing U.S. support for its war against Russia.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump complained that the U.S. had sent more in military and economic assistance to Ukraine than its European partners, adding, “We’re looking to do a deal with Ukraine where they’re going to secure what we’re giving them with their rare earth and other things.”
Trump suggested that he’s received word from the Ukrainian government that they’d be willing to make a deal to give the U.S. access to the elements critical to the modern high-tech economy.
Trump, who had previously said he’d bring about a rapid end to the war, said talks are ongoing to bring the conflict to a close.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told the Associated Press on Saturday that any negotiations between the U.S. and Russia but without his country were unacceptable.
He said his team has been in contact with the Trump administration, but those discussions are at a “general level,” and he believes in-person meetings will take place soon to develop more detailed agreements.

Why is he like this?
Most of the rare earth deposits are in the Donbas and under Russian occupation. Which means Trump is gonna help the Ukrainians retake the Donbas 😳
No he said he wants the “rare earth” , singular. He probably thinks it’s a gold plated globe or something.
No one actually believe he was ever going to help Ukraine, right? Never forget that his first impeachment was for blackmailing Ukraine into falsely investigating Hunter Biden under threat of withholding arms, which was followed shortly after by Russia’s invasion. He will strip Ukraine of whatever value he can and give the rest to Putin in a “peace” deal.
I am completely serious, Ukraine should offer Trump to rename the Donbas Basin the “Trump Basin” or to establish the “Trump Raw Materials Initiative”. The only chance they have is to stroke his ego.

Unironically if it means assisting Ukraine take back the Donbas, Ukraine should immediately take any deal Trump offers them in regard to Rare Earth elements. Sure it sucks to give up but so does losing the war, you can work on rebuilding your country etc with EU support after.
But I also don’t believe Ukraine aid survives.

Are the rare earth deposits in Ukraine especially usable? I hear about deposits all the time and it’s hard to tell any of them apart.

How much annual revenue can those rare earth deposits yield. Doing absolutely no research and just pulling a number out of my ass, I’d guess under 100 million a year in ideal conditions
